Cyber crooks targeting smartphones: McAfee
San Francisco (AFP) Feb 8, 2011 - Smartphones have become prime targets for hackers and spammers, computer security firm McAfee said in a report released Tuesday. The number of pieces of malicious software, referred to as "malware," surged 46 percent last year as compared with 2009, according to a McAfee Threats Report for the final three months of 2010. "Cybercriminals are keeping tabs on what's popular, and what will have the biggest impact from the smallest effort," said McAfee Labs senior vice president Vincent Weafer. "We've seen a significant shift in various regions, showing that cybercriminals are tapped in to trends worldwide," he continued. "McAfee Labs also sees the direct correlation between device popularity and cybercriminal activity, a trend we expect to surge in 2011."

McAfee has seen software threats to mobile devices steadily increase in recent years as the popularity of smartphones and tablet computers has climbed. "Threats to mobile platforms are not new," McAfee said in the report. "However, as more consumers use mobile devices and tablets in their daily lives and at work, cybercriminals have taken note." Geinimi malware slipped into legitimate games and other applications for Android-based mobile phones was listed by McAfee as "one of the most important threats of the quarter." As greater varieties of smartphones, tablets, televisions, and computers link to the Internet, hackers are likely to resort to "poisoning" Internet search results with links to websites booby-trapped with malware, according to McAfee.

"Web-based threats will continue to grow in size and sophistication," McAfee said. Hacker tactics include luring people to bogus websites and then tricking them into downloading malware or revealing valuable information. Adobe software products such as Flash and Acrobat were the "clear choice of malware authors and cybercriminals" when it came to compromising computers or networks, according to McAfee, In good news, spam in the final quarter of 2010 hit is lowest level in three years, the report indicated.

President Barack Obama's daughters Malia and Sasha won't be on Facebook anytime soon, First Lady Michelle Obama said Wednesday.

"I'm not a big fan of young kids having Facebook. It's not something they need. It's not necessary," Obama told the NBC Today Show, revealing that neither girl has been allowed to create an account.

Obama said she views the strict Internet guidelines as the upside of the security bubble that envelopes the first family.

"I think we're lucky that there are a lot of constraints -- stuff like Secret Service," she told the TV network.

Malia Obama is 12 years old, while her younger sister Sasha is nine.

Facebook officially has a lower age limit of 13 for its users, but kids who are much younger frequently register for accounts at the popular website by simply lying about their age when they sign up.

As to whether her kids will be allowed to sign up for accounts in the future, the first lady said: "It depends on when we leave (the White House) and how old they are."

Facebook opens Hong Kong office in Asia push
Hong Kong (AFP) Feb 9, 2011 - Facebook has opened a Hong Kong office as it looks to boost its presence in Asia, even though the social networking giant is banned in mainland China, a potentially huge market.

The opening of the sales office in Hong Kong, a semi-autonomous Chinese territory, comes after Facebook opened an office in Singapore last year, as social networking sites and Internet traffic see a marked rise in the region.

Last March the California-based group announced a new office in the southern Indian IT hub of Hyderabad to deal with advertising and customer support.

The Hong Kong opening, "following Singapore demonstrates Facebook's commitment to Asia, and in particular to Hong Kong and Taiwan, where there are active online populations and sophisticated digital marketing communities," Facebook said in a statement Tuesday.

The company, which already has a network of sales offices in North America and Europe, said more than 80 of the top 100 advertisers in the United States advertise on Facebook, adding that it is working with major brands across Asia.

"We are investing in a team to scale with the business here in the region, and will start with a handful of employees and add more as the business grows," a spokeswoman said.

She declined to disclose the number of Facebook users in Hong Kong and Taiwan. The site has about 500 million users worldwide.

Blake Chandlee, Facebook's vice-president and commercial director for emerging markets, played down the idea that the Hong Kong office is a sign that Facebook is eyeing a move into China -- where it remains banned.

"We have no plans right now to talk about entering into mainland China and trying to be aggressive in that," he told AFP.

Chandlee said the site was available in "all the Chinese dialects" and "for us that is the first step in any part of the world to make sure people are able to experience Facebook in a language they're comfortable with."

Last year, search engine Google claimed it was the victim of a highly sophisticated cyber attack in mid-December 2009 that originated from China, apparently to gain access to email accounts of Chinese human rights activists.

Google shut down its Chinese search engine, automatically re-routing mainland users to its uncensored site in Hong Kong. The firm later ended the automatic re-direct to avoid having its licence suspended by China.

Other Asian nations have also presented challenges to technology firms with several countries including Vietnam and Thailand having moved to limit political debate online in recent years by attempting to block some sites, including Facebook.
