Garmin, the U.S. maker of GPS devices fighting back against smartphones that can do the same thing, has announced a heads-up navigational display for cars.

The Garmin HUD sits on the dash and projects a simple set of basic navigation data onto a transparent film affixed to a vehicle's windshield, Tech Crunch reported Monday.

Garmin has set a $129 price on the system similar to the technology found in some very expensive and well-equipped luxury cars.

The windshield readout will display current speed, speed limit, an indicator to show the direction of the next turn and the distance to it, as well as estimated arrival time, Garmin said.

It can also alert a driver to traffic delays and traffic camera locations, and auto-adjusts its display for night and day.

The HUD will work with any Bluetooth-capable Android, iOS or Windows Phone 8 smartphone that can run Garmin's StreetPilot and Navigon applications, the company said.
