Watch MIT's Atlas robot carry heavy objects

A robot that can carry objects of different weights in each of its hands could be valuable to industries like construction, warehouse work and much more.

Researchers at MIT have been working to perfect the Atlas robot's ability to carefully move objects of different weights while maintaining balance. Atlas, a Boston Dynamics humanoid robot submitted by MIT in the DARPA Robotics Challenge, has been gaining abilities for quite some time, and now it seems the researchers/developers are refining the goals they wish to accomplish with the robot.

A recent video from the MIT team shows the robot dragging a metal truss. If researchers can improve the robot's speed and ability to perform minute actions, Atlas could soon be ready for the field.

DARPA issues RFI for robotic space services for satellites
Washington (UPI) Sep 4, 2014
The U.S. military is looking for space robotic services for critical satellites in geostationary Earth orbit. Satellites currently in geostationary orbit - 22,000 miles above the Earth - are designed to operate without upgrades or repairs for their lifespan, meaning they are larger in size, more complex and more costly than satellites in low Earth orbit. The U.S. Defense Advanc ... read more
