US warship visit to Georgia not 'constructive': Moscow
by Staff Writers
Moscow (AFP) June 21, 2011

The Russian foreign ministry said Tuesday that the arrival of a US warship in ex-Soviet Georgia was damaging to efforts to improve relations between Moscow and Washington.

The Navy cruiser Monterey, equipped with a ballistic missile defence system, arrived in the Georgian port of Batumi on Monday for a three-day training programme.

"Such maneouvres are in contradiction with the current level of Russian-American relations," the ministry said in a statement.

"We expect a more constructive approach from Washington."

US warships have regularly visited ally Georgia's ports since the country's brief war with Russia in 2008, despite repeated criticism from officials in Moscow.

Dealings between Moscow and Washington have recently improved however, with President Barack Obama and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev having made a revival of relations a priority.
