US resumes Afghanistan flights from carrier
Manama (AFP) Oct 6, 2008 US warplanes have resumed flights over Afghanistan from the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan after it completed routine maintenance, the navy's Bahrain-based Fifth Fleet said on Monday. "Aircraft from Carrier Air Wing 14 launched from the deck of USS Ronald Reagan on October 5, resuming sorties in support of Operation Enduring Freedom" in Afghanistan, the Fifth Fleet said in a statement. The aircraft carrier returned to the Gulf of Oman after completion of the maintenance, the statement said without specifying in which Middle East port the work had been carried out or how long it had taken. "We performed some routine maintenance, the crew got some well-deserved liberty and now we're back on station doing what we do best," said Captain Kenneth Norton, the carrier's commanding officer. The Ronald Reagan first deployed in the area on August 28. The aircraft carrier is the flagship of the Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group, which includes the cruiser USS Chancellorsville, the destroyers USS Decatur, USS Howard and USS Gridley, and the frigate USS Thach. Fifth Fleet spokewoman Jane Campbell told AFP the maintenance was entirely routine and other US and coalition aircraft based in the region continued flights over Afghanistan, as well as Iraq, while the Ronald Reagan was away.
