Typhoon kills two in Taiwan: officials

Two people have been killed and six others injured after a typhoon bringing strong winds and heavy rains pounded Taiwan, the National Fire Agency said Tuesday.

Typhoon Fung-wong slammed into Taiwan on Monday morning, sparking flash floods and forcing 1,200 people to evacuate from their homes across the island.

A 51-year-old woman drowned in southern Tainan county while a 68-year-old man died when the gale-force winds blew him from the roof of his home in eastern Taiwan, the agency said.

The six wounded include a woman who was hit by a falling tree while riding her motorcycle, the agency said.

The typhoon also caused an estimated 177 million Taiwan dollars (5.82 million US) in damages to agriculture, authorities said.

Taiwan was on high alert after tropical storm Kalmaegi left 20 people dead and six others missing after striking the island earlier this month.

Late Monday, Fung-wong made landfall in southeast China's Fujian and was expected to bring further heavy rains and strong winds to the coastal areas of the province early Tuesday, Chinese state media said.

Three people went missing in the Philippines over the weekend when Fung-wong brushed past the northern tip of the main island of Luzon, causing widespread flooding, landslides and power outages, rescue officials said.
