Washington (AFP) July 31, 2011

Tropical Storm Eugene has formed over the North Pacific Ocean and is expected to strengthen in the coming days though it remained far from the Mexican coast, the US forecasters said Sunday.

The fifth named storm of the May 15-November 30 Eastern Pacific hurricane season, Eugene was located about 410 miles (660 kilometers) south of Acapulco, Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

It had maximum sustained winds of 40 miles (64 kilometers) per hour and was moving west-northwest at 10 miles (16 kilometers) per hour.

No coastal watches or warnings were in effect.

The storm was expected to continue moving in a west-northwesterly direction over the "next couple of days," the Miami-based NHC said in a statement.

"Some strengthening is forecast during the next couple of days," it added.
