Tanker runs aground off Estonia, no spill threat: police
by Staff Writers
Tallinn (AFP) Sept 24, 2012

An oil tanker ran aground off the Estonian capital Tallinn early Monday, but there was no threat of pollution from the vessel, police in the Baltic state said.

The Bahamas-flagged Kyeema Spirit ran aground east of Aegna Island at the entrance to Tallinn Bay.

"Bilge water is leaking from the tank, but there is no threat of pollution and lives are not in danger," the Estonian police and border guard board said in a statement.

The tanker -- which is 249 metres (817 feet) long and 44 metres (144 feet) wide -- was built in 1999.

Aegna Island is just 14 kilometres (nine miles) from the port in the centre of Tallinn, and two kilometres from the mainland.
