TSA orders desktop explosive trace detectors

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration has ordered more than a thousand explosive trace detectors from Implant Sciences Corporation.

The company, which specializes in systems and sensors for homeland defense, said the initial order is for 1,170 QS-B220 Desktop Explosive Trace Detectors and ancillary supplies but gave no indication as to the value of the contract.

The QS-B220 uses Ion Mobility Spectrometry to detect and identify trace amounts of a wide variety of explosives and can also be used to detect drugs. It features push-button maintenance and diagnostics, and a patented internal automatic calibration system.

"Receiving this order from the TSA is a goal that Implant Sciences has been driving towards for a number of years," said Implant Sciences' Chief Executive Officer Glenn D. Bolduc. "Achieving it is a major milestone for the company and a tribute to the ability and dedication of our employees.

"We are proud to help protect the traveling public in the United States and look forward to a long working relationship with the TSA."

The desktop system will be deployed at airports around the country.
