Suntech Maximizes Solar Energy At Caltech

Suntech Power Holdings has announced the completion of the California Institute of Technology's (Caltech) 238 kWp solar array. The system was designed and installed by Suntech Energy Solutions, a wholly owned subsidiary of Suntech Power Holdings and utilized an innovative space frame that accommodated more modules to maximize solar energy production.

This also resulted in more shading for cars on the top deck of the parking structure where the array is located.

"The use of the innovative space frame structure to mount the modules allowed us to maximize both electricity production and coverage of the top parking deck for Caltech," said Mack MacReady, Suntech Energy Solutions' Sr. Project Manager.

"This solar array will provide the optimal production in terms of both energy produced and at the best economic return."

The system will produce approximately 320,000 kilowatt hours in its first year of operation -- enough to power the equivalent of 30 homes. Caltech began investigating solar options in 2006 as part of its broader sustainability initiatives.

"We appreciate Suntech Energy Solution's help and assistance in achieving this milestone," said Jim Cowell, Associate VP for Facilities at Caltech. "This facility will allow us to reduce our dependence on nonrenewable sources of energy and allow Caltech to conduct research in a more sustainable way."

"Caltech has taken a leadership role in Pasadena and among universities across the country in sustainability," said Mark Newton, Sr. Project Developer, Suntech Energy Solutions.

"It has been our great pleasure to help them meet their sustainability objectives."

The solar array is the largest commercial PV installation in the city of Pasadena. Caltech took advantage of the Pasadena Water and Power, Pasadena Solar Initiative rebate program under the auspices of the California Solar Initiative (CSI). Pasadena has set a goal of achieving 14 MW of solar within their service territory and has created one of the most generous incentive programs in the country.

"Pasadena has been a leader among public utilities in developing programs to meet the goals of the CSI," said Steve Chadima, VP of External Affairs, Suntech Energy Solutions. "We hope that this project serves as an inspiration to other public utilities and to colleges and universities throughout California in support of the state's efforts to generate an increasing amount of its electricity from renewable sources."
