Stellar Team's SATURN Wins At The MoD Grand Challenge
Copehill Down, UK (SPX) Aug 25, 2008 SELEX Galileo, of Finmeccanica, has achieved success at the MoD Grand Challenge finale as part of the winning Stellar Team. Stellar team's winning SATURN (Sensing and Autonomous Tactical Urban Reconnaissance Network) solution was awarded the highest points of any participants by judging panel after successfully identifying the majority of the threats planted at the MoD's Urban warfare training facility at Copehill Down on Salisbury Plain. The SATURN solution employs unmanned aerial and ground vehicles each fitted with sensors to report findings back to a remote processing station using novel algorithms to process data and direct the vehicles' behaviour. Judges commended Stellar team's solution for its use of an integrated and autonomous system. SELEX Galileo carried out the system integration and were responsible for the unique self forming communications network and single user interface which allowed a single operator to monitor the multiple vehicle system. The winning SATURN solution uses SELEX Galileo's CISP communications technology to seamlessly network all the system elements together. CISP is currently used within SELEX Galileo's HYDRA family of sensor products which are in service with the Finnish Armed Forces. The Stellar team comprised of Stellar Research Services, SELEX Galileo, Cranfield University, Bluebear Systems Research, Marshall SDG and TRW Conekt. The MoD Grand Challenge was set in February 2007 as a competition open to the defence industry and academia to develop an autonomous system to detect, identify and locate a range of threats in an urban environment. Alvin Wilby, SVP Electonic Warfare and Battlespace at SELEX Galileo said: "SELEX Galileo is proud to have been part of the winning Stellar team at the first MoD Grand Challenge.
