Snowstorm blankets eastern Canada, kills four
Ottawa (AFP) Dec 17, 2007 A violent storm dropped 30-60 centimeters (12-24 inches) of snow in eastern Canada, causing road accidents that left at least four people dead and disrupting air traffic, officials said Monday. Dozens of flights from Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City and Halifax were canceled or delayed. Along the Atlantic seaboard, up to 20,000 homes were without electricity in New Brunswick, as 165 kilometers per hour (105 miles per hour) winds knocked out power lines. Most schools in Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia provinces were closed due to the insurmountable snow pack. And at least four people died in road accidents, including a 16-year-old in Nova Scotia and three others in Ontario where 1,650 crashes were reported since Sunday, said police. In one incident, a female driver was killed at noon Sunday when she was struck by a snow plough on the side of a highway while outside of her car to adjust a windshield wiper on her vehicle, Ontario Provincial Police said. The storm is the second to wallop eastern Canada in the past two weeks. Since mid-November, nearly half of the usual snowfall for an entire winter has blanketed these parts.
