Slovakia's winter death-toll hits 122, authorities say

by Staff Writers
Bratislava (AFP) March 7, 2011
The cold weather has claimed 122 lives this winter in Slovakia, local health authorities said, but were unable to confirm the number of homeless victims.

"From November 1 to February 28, there have been 122 autopsies that showed low temperature as the main cause of death," Radoslava Miklasova from the Slovak Healthcare Authority told AFP.

She could not specify the number of homeless deaths.

Slovakia's health ministry and the police say they do not keep statistics on deaths among the homeless.

"It's convenient for authorities to act as if the problem didn't exist," Martin Opeta from the Nota Bene civic association working with homeless people told AFP.

"There is a homeless shelter in the capital Bratislava that can accommodate up to 300 people a night," Opeta added.

According to him, there are some 3,000 homeless in Bratislava and up to 50,000 across Slovakia, an European Union member state of 5.4 million people.
