Sandia National Laboratories has not just been busy in the lab; it has been powering the economy. Recent studies reveal that the tech innovations developed at Sandia have pumped a staggering $140 billion into the U.S. economy since 2000. This monumental figure represents a major milestone for Sandia, a lab with a rich 75-year history of advancing technology.

"Sandia National Laboratories has consistently led the way in translating research into tangible economic benefits," shared Mary Monson, Senior Manager of Business Development at Sandia. The labs' contribution underscores its key role in enhancing national security and bolstering the economy.

Economic Impacts Detailed
Two comprehensive studies, conducted by TechLink at Montana State University, underline Sandia's profound economic influence: a total of $140 billion in economic impact, with $72.2 billion from new product sales and $22.52 billion of those sales to the government. Additionally, the creation of 607,246 jobs and $14.1 billion in new tax revenue signify the extensive reach of Sandia's technological advancements.

This economic boon stems from Sandia's successful partnerships through Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs) and patent license agreements (PLAs), fostering collaboration between the lab and various industry sectors. These partnerships have been instrumental in bringing new technologies to market, benefiting not just the nuclear weapons stockpile but also contributing significantly to the national economy.

Innovative Programs and Partnerships
Sandia has introduced several programs aimed at accelerating the commercialization of its innovations. The DOE Boost Platform, in collaboration with FedTech and 13 other DOE labs, seeks to bridge the gap between national labs and the energy challenges facing communities, especially in rural areas. One notable project under this initiative aims to incorporate Sandia's algae technology into Santa Fe's municipal water system.

Another initiative, the C-4 Partnering Model, fosters a regional ecosystem for manufacturing clean energy technologies through co-location, collaboration, community, and communication. The Semiconductor Sector S2-EDGE program, meanwhile, targets the semiconductor and microelectronics industries, aiming to translate lab-developed technologies into market-ready solutions.

Longstanding Collaborations Bear Fruit
Sandia's collaboration with Goodyear is a prime example of a successful long-term partnership. Leveraging Sandia's expertise in computational mechanics and simulation, this alliance has led to significant advancements in tire performance and manufacturing processes. The Assurance TripleTred tire and the development of Virtual Flat Track technology exemplify the fruits of this collaboration.

Similarly, Sandia's work with the Public Service Company of New Mexico (PNM) highlights the lab's commitment to advancing clean energy solutions and grid resilience. A CRADA between Sandia and PNM focuses on integrating distributed and centralized clean energy sources to achieve a carbon emissions-free target by 2040.
