Saab to study precision ammo for shoulder-fired weapons

Quantum Imaging gets Multi-spectral Targeting System contract
Washington (UPI) Oct 4, 2016 - Quantum Imaging has been awarded a $8 million U.S. Navy contract for the Multi-spectral Targeting System array of military aircraft cameras.

The firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity contract with a five-year ordering period covers short-wave infrared camera assemblies, visible-near infrared camera, low-light scientific complementary metal-oxide semiconductor camera, repairs and provisioning item order spare parts for the system.

The cameras are part of the supplies required for the replacement and sustainment of the Multi-spectral Targeting System configurations that support Navy, Army and Air Force aircraft.

These systems provide intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, detection, identification and targeting capability in day and night operations for manned and unmanned platforms.

Work will be performed in Colorado and has an expected completion date of September 2021.

The Naval Surface Warfare Center is the contracting entity.

Saab is to conduct research on development of precision-engagement ammunition for small arms weaponry for the U.S. military.

The study was commissioned by the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency for its Massive Overmatch Assault Round project.

The value of the contract was not disclosed.

Saab said it will use its Carl-Gustaf and AT4 shoulder-fired weapons -- they are both in use with the U.S. Army -- for the research, which involve analysis of possible concepts, proposal of solutions and identification of areas for further study.

"This research is crucial to improving the power of small military units," said Gorgen Johansson, head of Saab's Dynamics business area. "Today's short-range weapons lack active guidance, while long-range weapons are extremely expensive, physically burdensome, and often require teams of operators that smaller units do not have. Saab is investigating a possible solution: a precision-guided munition for shoulder-fired weapons that provides a long-range, high-precision, multi-target capability.

"Analyzing already-established platforms allows the research to remain focused on the munition itself. Rather than developing a completely new solution, we are seeking to apply improved capabilities to existing systems ... ."

AM General to provide Humvees to Afghanistan, Ukraine and U.S. forces
South Bend, Ind. (UPI) Oct 4, 2016 - AM General has been awarded $151 million in new contracts and modifications to provide High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles, or Humvees, to Afghanistan, Ukraine and the U.S. National Guard and Reserves, the company announced Monday.

The deals cover new vehicles, automotive kits, spare parts and training, AM General said in a statement.

The company will supply 360 M1152A1B2 and 73 M1151A1B1 variants to Afghanistan.

It will provide 40 M1152 ambulances to the Ukraine and 237 M997A3 ambluance vehicles to U.S. forces.

AM General said Humvees are used in more than 60 partner nations, with about 230,000 of the vehicles fielded worldwide.
