Russian soldier dies from swine flu: reports

by Staff Writers
Moscow (AFP) Jan 23, 2011
A Russian soldier has died after suffering from swine flu, media reports quoted the defence ministry as saying Sunday.

The young air force conscript died Friday, ten days after being diagnosed with the flu, at a regional hospital in Chelyabinsk near the Ural Mountains "despite all measures taken by military and civilian doctors," the reports said.

Sixty-three soldiers suffering from pneumonia are currently hospitalised there, the Itar-Tass news agency said.

The army's medical service has launched a probe to study the epidemiological situation in military units and to take preventive measures, reports added.

The Russian army is for the harsh living conditions and treatment of its young recruits, leading many to commit suicide.
