British engineering firm Rolls-Royce is to collaborate with French power firm EDF to build four new nuclear power plants in Britain, it said on Wednesday.

The European Pressurised Reactors are to be built at Hinkley Point in southwest England and Sizewell in southern England. The first should be operational by the end of 2017, while all four should be on stream by 2025.

"The agreement covers engineering and technical support during both the pre- and post-construction phases," Rolls-Royce said, announcing the project with EDF Energy, the UK division of the French utility group.

"In addition, joint development, validation and supervision of the supply chain, together with the potential for the provision of nuclear related systems, will be explored."

The deal comes amid growing interest in nuclear power around the world, sparked by a desire by governments to reduce their dependence on oil, gas and coal.

France produces around 80 percent of its electricity from nuclear power and President Nicolas Sarkozy has been active in trumpeting his country's know-how to win French companies new business abroad.

EDF operates 58 nuclear facilities in France.

Rolls-Royce announced plans in July to build a new factory to make systems and components for nuclear power stations, with strong links to a British government-funded Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.

Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson, head of EDF Energy's Nuclear New Build business said: "As a country we face a significant energy challenge to keep the lights on, tackle climate change and maintain affordable prices.

"We believe the challenge can be met through greater energy efficiency and the generation of electricity from a diverse range of sources including nuclear and renewables.

And he added: "This agreement with Rolls-Royce is a welcome development in ensuring we achieve our new nuclear build plans.

"Their name is one of the strongest engineering brands in the UK and they have a lot of strength in the nuclear industry including a history of work for British Energy."
