Berlin, Germany (SPX) Apr 10, 2024

Embedded World - Quectel Wireless Solutions, a prominent provider of IoT solutions globally, today unveiled the Quectel BG95-S5 3GPP non-terrestrial network (NTN) satellite communication module. This module adheres to 3GPP Release 17 IoT-NTN standards using S and L band frequencies for satellite communications. Additionally, the BG95-S5 supports LTE Cat M1, Cat NB2, eGPRS, and integrated GNSS.

Designed in a compact SMT form measuring 23.6 mm + 19.9 mm + 2.2 mm, the BG95-S5 is well-suited for applications with limited space that require access to various network technologies. With the rise of NTN satellite communication as constellations expand, the module's capability to connect via NTN, cellular, and GNSS offers extensive flexibility for designers, ensuring device connectivity across diverse deployment locations.

Norbert Muhrer, President and CSO of Quectel Wireless Solutions, remarked, "This versatile module enables use cases that rely on ubiquitous connectivity to utilize NTNs or LTE Cat M1, Cat NB2, eGPRS or GNSS depending on availability in the deployment location." He added that the small size and low power consumption of the BG95-S5 provide designers with numerous options, anticipating its implementation in a range of devices from wireless point of sale systems to asset management, heavy industry, and wearables.

The module also offers low power consumption and operates across a wide temperature range of -40C to +85C. Quectel facilitates rapid product development through comprehensive support including reference designs, evaluation tools, and technical assistance, with certification processes currently in progress for Skylo's NTN and various North American cellular and regulatory bodies.

Consistency in pin assignments with other BG95 series models ensures easy integration into NTN networks. The module's broad support for Internet protocols, industry-standard interfaces, and multiple functionalities enhances its adaptability for M2M applications.

Security is a foundational element in the development of Quectel's IoT modules. The company integrates best industry practices and standards from the design stage through to firmware/software development to mitigate risks, collaborating with independent testing organizations and incorporating robust security practices such as SBOMs, VEX files, and firmware binary analysis throughout the software development lifecycle.
