Pacific Gas and Electric Company announced it has issued a formal solicitation for new renewable energy on behalf of its five million electric customers. This is the utility's sixth renewable energy solicitation since 2002.

"Renewable energy is a cornerstone of PG and E's broader strategy to deliver clean, safe and reliable energy to our customers throughout northern and central California," said Fong Wan, PG and E's vice president of energy procurement. "We look forward to receiving a wide range of competitive offers from prospective renewable energy suppliers that will enable us to continue to diversify and grow our clean energy supply."

Proposals for renewable energy projects may include power purchase agreements from generation sources owned and operated by others, new generation facilities constructed for utility ownership, or sites suitable for development of renewable energy projects. Qualifying renewable sources in PG and E's portfolio include solar, wind, biomass, geothermal, and all hydroelectric.

PG and E has scheduled a bidders conference for March 17 and offers are due on May 12. For more information about the renewable solicitation, please go here.

Since 2002, PG and E has entered into contracts for more than 2,000 megawatts (MW) of renewable power. California law requires each investor-owned utility to increase the share of eligible renewable generating resources in its electric power portfolio to 20 percent by 2010-12. PG and E expects to have 14 percent of its energy from renewable sources in 2008 and already has 20 percent of its resources under contract from renewables producers.
