UAE buys Saab surveillance planes in $1.27 bln deal
Dubai (AFP) Nov 9, 2015 - The United Arab Emirates Air Force announced Monday a $1.27-billion deal with Swedish defence giant Saab to purchase two surveillance planes and upgrade two others.

The two new aircraft are Global 6000 surveillance planes, while the old planes to be upgraded are part of the UAE's fleet of Saab 340s, said Major General Abdullah al-Hashimi at a joint press conference at the Dubai Airshow.

The date of delivery has not been finalised, but could be within two years, he said.

The purchase "supports surveillance capabilities" of the Gulf nation's Air Force, he said.

The UAE has been part of the US-led coalition bombing militants of the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

It has also played a key role in the Saudi-led coalition that launched a military campaign in March against Iran-backed rebels in Yemen.

Orbital ATK has set up an affiliate in the United Arab Emirates through a partnership with Al Tuff International to support its growing business in the region.

The affiliate, Orbital ATK LLC, will provide defense product sales and services related to small-, medium- and large-caliber ammunition production; precision and strike munitions; special mission aircraft; and Bushmaster cannons.

"Orbital ATK has been supporting our Emirati ally for many years with both products and infrastructure support," said Mike Kahn, president of Orbital ATK's Defense Systems Group. "Our new Emirati business is important as we further enhance our commitment to being a strong regional partner."

Added Chris Beach, general manager of the new affiliate: "We will strive to add value in the Emirates by the introduction of innovative products, services and technologies. Our company shares the national goals of Emiratization and supports key partner organizations like the Emirates Defense Industries Companies, Tawazun and Mubadala, in achieving their objectives."

Orbital ATK and Al Tuff International first opened a branch office together in Abu Dhabi in 2010. The new company will move into offices co-located with Al Tuff International on Reem Island.

UAE getting Boeing regional headquarters
Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UPI) Nov 9, 2015 - Boeing Plans to Establish a Middle East Headquarters in the United Arab Emirates that will include a maintenance training facility and a parts warehouse.

A memorandum of agreement for the headquarters was signed by Boeing and the Dubai Aviation City Corporation at the Dubai Airshow.

"Boeing is the world's leading aerospace company, and to ensure our regional competitiveness, we have taken a strategic decision to establish our regional headquarters in what will become an unrivaled logistics and aviation hub," said Boeing President and Chief Executive Officer Dennis Muilenburg.

"This agreement demonstrates Boeing's commitment to our customers in the region and support for the Dubai government's vision for Dubai South."

Dubai South, previously called Dubai World Central, is an emerging city in the emirate. It was founded in 2006 as a Government of Dubai project. Boeing plans on commencing operations there by the end of 2017.

Dubai Aviation City Corporation is described by Boeing as the parent organization of Dubai South.

Bullets, cluster bombs at Thai arms fair despite censure over junta rule
Bangkok (AFP) Nov 4, 2015
French anti-tank missiles, Swedish jets and American assault rifles - Western governments have criticised Thailand's junta for toppling democracy but at a Bangkok arms fair it was business as usual. The kingdom's well-oiled military has been handsomely rewarded in the last decade during which it has twice seized power, ousting elected governments in 2006 and 2014 coups. In that time the ... read more
