Colonel Rabe Abubakar, a spokesman for the unit tasked with protecting oil facilities and personnel in the Niger Delta, said the armed men attacked a flowstation at Nembe in Bayelsa state around 4.00 am (0300 GMT).

"They fired several shots sporadically at the flowstation with the aim of destroying it, but ... were repelled," he said.

Abubakar said the attackers sustained "various degrees of injuries" but that there were no other casualties and the flowstation, operated according to him by Neste Oil, is still intact.

Last week, the military said they foiled a plot to attack a Chevron oil facility.

Since January 2006, attacks on oil facilities have cut Nigeria's crude output by more than one quarter.

The country's daily oil output currently stands at 1.78 million barrels a day -- down from 2.6 million barrels in 2006.
