EARTH OBSERVATION
NASA invites community to learn about Magnetospheric Mission

NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, will host a Sunday Experiment on January 18, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. EST. The event is free and open to the public with a focus on elementary school-aged children and their families.

This month's Sunday Experiment features fun activities to help children of all ages learn about NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale, or MMS, mission. MMS will solve the mystery of how magnetic fields around Earth connect and disconnect, explosively releasing energy via a process known as magnetic reconnection.

A NASA scientist will provide a brief mission overview and volunteers will provide hands-on activities that include spacecraft modeling, 3-D printing, NASA Apps and iPad Teacher Tools, and magnetism demos. Plus, learn how to host your own MMS launch party!

MMS is comprised of four identical instrumented spacecraft that will use the Earth's magnetic field as a natural laboratory to study magnetic reconnection, one of the most important drivers of space weather events.

NASA Satellite Set to Get the Dirt on Soil Moisture
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jan 09, 2015
A new NASA satellite that will peer into the topmost layer of Earth's soils to measure the hidden waters that influence our weather and climate is in final preparations for a Jan. 29 dawn launch from California. The Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission will take the pulse of a key measure of our water planet: how freshwater cycles over Earth's land surfaces in the form of soil moist ... read more
