Most Finns against new nuclear reactors in Finland: poll

More than half of Finns are opposed to the building of new nuclear reactors in the Nordic country, a poll published Thursday showed.

Some 53 percent said they were against new nuclear reactor projects, while 34 percent said they supported the idea, according to the poll conducted by research company Taloustutkimus for Finnish national broadcaster YLE.

Around 12 percent of those questioned were undecided.

Some 25 percent of electricity consumed in Finland is produced in nuclear power plants.

The Nordic country's fifth nuclear reactor, the world's first next generation pressurised water reactor, is being built in Olkiluoto, in southwest Finland, by French firm Areva and Germany's Siemens.

Electricity producer Teollisuuden Voima (TVO) submitted an application on April 25 to the economy ministry to build the country's sixth reactor, also in Olkiluoto.

In addition to TVO, utilities Fortum and Fennovoima are planning new nuclear reactors and are expected to send their applications to the ministry by the end of this year.

The poll of 1,007 Finns was conducted between April 28 and May 6, with a margin of error of about 2.5 percentage points in either direction.

New agency to promote French nuclear know-how

The French government said Wednesday it plans to create a new agency in charge of offering French nuclear expertise to countries wishing to develop civilian nuclear power.
