Mitsubishi Heavy to boost reactor production: report

Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. will boost its production of core nuclear power equipment by investing 15 billion yen (138 million dollars) in its key plant, a newspaper reported on Saturday.

The nation's largest heavy machinery manufacturer plans to double production capacity at its nuclear power equipment plant in Akashi, western Japan, the Nikkei business daily said.

Construction would begin in January for completion in mid-2011, the newspaper added.

The plan was part of the firm's efforts to meet growing demands for nuclear reactors in the global market amid the recent surge in oil prices and calls for a cut in greenhouse gas emissions, the daily said.

With the capacity expansion, Mitsubishi Heavy intended to slash production time for a reactor vessel from three years to two years, it said.

Mitsubishi Heavy won contracts in 2007 to deliver two large nuclear reactors to Luminant, a power company in the US state of Texas, and is now expecting orders for about four reactors in Japan.

The firm aims to increase sales from its nuclear power business to 600 billion yen in 10 years from the current 200 billion yen.

Iran offers nuclear aid to Nigeria

Iran is ready to share its nuclear technology with Nigeria to help the energy-starved west African powerhouse boost electricity generation, a senior Iranian official has said.
