Mexico storm upgraded to hurricane: forecasters
by Staff Writers
Miami (AFP) June 25, 2013

Tropical Storm Cosme was upgraded to a hurricane on Tuesday, as it swirled off Mexico's Pacific coast, forecasters said.

At 1500 GMT, Cosme was about 365 miles (585 kilometers) south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 75 miles (120 kilometers) per hour.

The storm was moving toward the northwest at around 18 miles (30 kilometers) per hour, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said, and was expected to pass near sparsely populated Socorro Island later Tuesday.

Forecasters said large swells created by Cosme will be felt along Mexico's Pacific coast from Manzanillo to Cabo Corrientes, and could cause dangerous surf and rip currents.

Revised NY toll shows 44 deaths from storm Sandy
New York (AFP) June 25, 2013 - Superstorm Sandy, which lashed the US east coast last year with historic fury, killed a total of 44 people in New York, according to a revised toll released on Tuesday.

Authorities said the death of an elderly man in the New York City borough of Queens now is being attributed to the massive storm, raising the previously released toll by one.

Most of the deaths from Sandy, which struck New York and the surrounding region on October 29, were in the borough of Staten Island, where 23 people were killed.

Elsewhere in the city, 12 people died in Queens, seven in Brooklyn and two in Manhattan.

Wide swathes of New York's low-lying areas flooded and thousands forced to evacuate their homes because of the storm, which also caused more than a million people to lose power.

Altogether, in the city and other US states, the storm killed around 120 people.

Man-made particles affect hurricane frequency: study
Paris (AFP) June 23, 2013
Higher levels of air pollution reduced the frequency of North Atlantic hurricanes and other tropical storms for most of the 20th century, a study said Sunday. Adding to evidence for mankind's impact on the weather system, the probe found a link between these powerful storms and aerosols, the scientific term for specks of matter suspended in a gas. Aerosols can occur in natural form - as ... read more
