Matternet, an innovative leader in urban drone delivery, has recently received a green light from the Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA), Germany's Federal Aviation Office, to begin beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) operations with its Matternet M2 drone delivery platform in Berlin. This groundbreaking authorization marks the start of Berlin's first-ever BVLOS drone delivery network, a significant milestone in urban drone delivery.

The Matternet M2 drone platform will play a crucial role in connecting Labor Berlin, Europe's largest hospital laboratory, to a network of hospitals across the city. Labor Berlin, known for providing diagnostic services to over 30 hospitals including Charite and Vivantes, handles an impressive volume of over 6 million lab samples annually. The integration of Matternet's drone network aims to drastically enhance the speed and efficiency of sample transportation in Berlin's densely populated landscape.

Andreas Raptopoulos, Founder and CEO of Matternet, emphasized the importance of this development: "Healthcare systems need a fast, reliable, and cost-effective solution to transport lab samples and pharmacy items to ensure patients receive best-in-class care." He further expressed his excitement about partnering with Labor Berlin to pioneer the first city-wide healthcare network in Germany's capital, highlighting the anticipated benefits for Berlin's citizens.

This novel drone network is particularly focused on emergency diagnostics, promising to not only streamline operational processes but also significantly reduce carbon emissions. Considering the daily car travel in the city spans nearly 250,000 miles, the adoption of drone delivery presents a sustainable alternative with considerable environmental benefits.

Nina Beikert, CEO of Labor Berlin, underlined the importance of this collaboration: "These operations align with our dedication to innovation and sustainability as drone delivery not only accelerates emergency testing but also enhances supply chain efficiencies while reducing greenhouse gas emissions." The initiative reflects a concerted effort to bolster healthcare access through cutting-edge technology.

Klaus Tenning, Head of Studies and Collaborations and Project Leader for Labor Berlin, shared his enthusiasm: "After years of preparation and pioneering work, we are excited to execute our vision for a fully operational network of drones delivering samples throughout our hospital service - to further improve patient care."

Matternet's experience in drone delivery is well-established. Holding U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Type Certification and Production Certification, along with BVLOS operational approvals from both the FAA and the Swiss Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA), the company has a proven track record. Since launching lab sample deliveries via drones in Switzerland in 2017 and in the U.S. in 2019, Matternet has successfully transported tens of thousands of specimens for leading healthcare institutions, including Ospedale Regionale di Lugano, University Zurich Hospital, Stadtspital Zurich in Switzerland, and, through its partnership with UPS, Wakemed Health and Wake Forest Baptist Health in the U.S.

The commencement of operations in Berlin, scheduled for early next year following federal state clearance, represents a significant expansion of Matternet's global footprint. This initiative in Berlin is poised to serve millions of patients annually, setting a precedent for urban drone delivery networks worldwide.
