Phnom Penh (AFP) Sept 15, 2008
At least 77 Cambodians have been struck dead by lightning so far this year, a sharp increase from the year before, an official said Monday.

Only 45 people were killed by lightning in the whole of last year, said Nhim Vanda, vice chairman of the National Committee for Disaster Management.

"We don't know the causes of the lightning but this year there have been so many lightning strikes compared to previous years," he told AFP.

Most of the victims have been farmers, he said, warning that people should avoid fields and stay indoors during storms.
