Leidos (NYSE:LDOS), a renowned leader in science and technology, has reached a significant milestone by deploying its innovative Exploration Potable Water Dispenser (xPWD) to the International Space Station (ISS). This deployment marks a substantial achievement in the domain of space exploration technology, providing astronauts with an advanced system for accessing potable water-a vital resource for long-duration space missions.

Developed under the umbrella of NASA's Cargo Mission Contract (CMC), the xPWD is the product of nearly three years of rigorous work by Leidos, encompassing design, development, testing, and certification processes. "Leidos is devoted to solving some of the toughest challenges in space exploration through innovation and determination," said Grant Kim, Senior Vice President and Operations Manager at Leidos. He further emphasized the importance of the system in supporting the health and research activities of astronauts.

The xPWD distinguishes itself with several key features intended to enhance the astronauts' living conditions aboard the ISS. It supplies potable-quality water at appropriate temperatures for both food and beverage rehydration, crucial for sustaining life and scientific work in space. The system's design is a leap forward in space technology, as it includes efficient plumbing line architecture and a novel Thermal Expansion Device that mitigates the risk of biofilm formation and microbial growth-a significant concern in the closed-loop environment of a spacecraft.

One of the most notable technological advancements integrated into the xPWD is the chemical-free Ultraviolet reactor, designed by AquiSense Technologies. The system utilizes UV-C LED technology for point-of-use water disinfection, an efficient method to ensure water purity without the use of chemicals that could potentially have adverse effects in microgravity. UV-C LED reactors are praised for their longer operational lifespans, which is particularly advantageous for missions that extend over several years, reducing the need for frequent servicing or component replacements.

The assembly and certification of the xPWD were finalized in December 2022, and the unit was subsequently delivered for launch aboard the NG-19 Cygnus spacecraft. The spacecraft's successful lift-off on August 1, 2023, was a precursor to the xPWD's deployment and operational status aboard the ISS, achieved on August 30, 2023. Since then, the system has been fully operational, effectively serving the crew's potable water requirements.

The xPWD's successful deployment to the ISS is not just a testament to Leidos' commitment to addressing complex challenges in space exploration but also reflects the advancements in spaceborne water purification systems.
