Israel army destroys tents, wells: Palestinians

Hebron, Palestinian Territories (AFP) Feb 22, 2011
Israeli troops on Tuesday destroyed several tents and two wells, including one from the Roman-era, near the West Bank city of Hebron, Palestinian witnesses told AFP.

The Israeli civil administration in the West Bank could not immediately be reached for comment on the report.

Witnesses said troops demolished around 12 tents and two wells near the village of Sussiya, which is adjacent to an Israeli settlement of the same name.

Azmi Shiyuki, a village official, told AFP one of the wells dated from the Roman era.

On February 1, the United Nations Organisation for Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs condemned Israeli demolition of cisterns and wells.

"It is difficult to understand the reasoning behind the destruction of basic rain water collection systems, some of them very old, which serve marginalised rural and herder Palestinian communities where water is already scarce and where drought is an ever-present threat," said Maxwell Gaylard, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for the occupied Palestinian territory.

"Such deliberate demolitions in occupied territory are also in contravention of Israel's obligations under international law," he said.
