Haiti landslides kill 4: official

At least four people were killed and five others injured Friday when houses collapsed in landslides in the southwest town of Jeremie, officials said.

Heavy rains in the region over a 24-hour period have caused flooding that damaged roads around the town.

"Houses built on the hillside were washed away by landslides, killing the occupants," local official Guillaume Silvera told AFP by telephone.

South African army on standby for floods

The South African army was on standby Friday in case of flooding along the country's longest river, the Orange, after weeks of torrential downpours killed at least 32 people.
