Greece's weather service EMY on Sunday issued a warning for a new heatwave set to affect the Mediterranean country for the entire week.

The heatwave will begin on Monday, will peak at an expected 43 degrees Celsius (109.4 Fahrenheit) on Tuesday and will begin falling on Saturday, EMY said in a statement.

"High temperatures are expected for almost the entire week starting on Monday," the agency said.

"The heatwave will likely end on Saturday," it added.

Highs of up to 41 degrees Celsius are expected on Monday in central Greece, with a maximum of 38C in Athens and Thessaloniki, EMY said.

On Tuesday, the capital could see a high of 40C.

Greece has already experienced two heatwaves in late June and early July, forcing officials to limit operating hours at the country's most-visited monument, the Acropolis in Athens.
