Georgia slashes water consumption amid historic drought

Georgia authorities have ordered drinking water distribution to be slashed as the state battles a historic drought that affects much of the southeastern United States.

State Governor Sonny Perdue ordered a 10 percent cut in supplies of drinking water, stressing this was just one of several measures taken as water supplies reach critical levels.

"In this unprecedented drought, we all have to pitch in and find ways to conserve our most precious resource," Perdue said after ordering the measure on Tuesday.

His press spokesman, Bill Brantley said the drought was the worst in at least a century.

"We are following the situation with huge concern," he said.

This restriction does not apply to distributors of water to farms.

The governor last week declared a state of emergency and asked for federal assistance.

Ultraviolet Light Helps To Secure Water Supply
Paris, France (SPX) Oct 22, 2007
A major public health issue and economic problem has been addressed in experiments carried out by researchers from the University Denis Diderot in Paris, and the VEOLIA Research Center in Maisons-Laffitte (France). Extremely chlorine-resistant parasites, known as Cryptosporidium, which cause a diarrheal disease in humans and can lead to significant mortality in immunodeficient patients, become virtually inactive when exposed to industrial UV reactors.
