An interplay of light and shadows cast the docking ports for Gateway, humanity's first space station around the Moon, into sharp relief.

Constructed by NASA's commercial partner Northrop Grumman, the HALO (Habitation and Logistics Outpost) is one of four modules designed for international astronaut teams to live, conduct research, and prepare for missions to the lunar South Pole region. The main structure of HALO is currently undergoing tests in Turin, Italy.

One of the docking ports inside HALO, pictured right, is designated for cargo spacecraft and Gateway's Lunar View module, which is supplied by ESA (European Space Agency). The exterior docking port, pictured left, will accommodate the SpaceX Starship and Blue Origin's Blue Moon Human Landing Systems during the Artemis IV and V missions, respectively.

Gateway will be launched into lunar orbit with the Power and Propulsion Element provided by Maxar Space Systems. It will later be expanded with ESA's Lunar I-Hab and Lunar View modules, the Crew and Science Airlock from the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre, advanced external robotics from the CSA (Canadian Space Agency), and essential hardware from JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency).

NASA and its international partners will use Gateway to explore the scientific mysteries of deep space. The space station is a crucial component of the Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the lunar surface for scientific discovery and to pave the way for the first human missions to Mars.

Lunar Impact Flux Insights
Sydney, Australia (SPX) Jul 08, 2024
Scholars have revisited the anchor points and historical construction of lunar crater chronology. Initially, the stratification of the Moon's near side relied on remote sensing data from ground-based telescopes and lunar orbiters before lunar samples were returned. As illustrated in Fig. 1, six manned missions and four robotic missions have brought back various samples, including basalts and volcanic glass, from different lunar geological units. These samples, through their lithology and thermal history ... read more
