French companies keen to build Lithuanian nuclear plant: minister

French companies want to take part in the construction of a new nuclear power plant in Lithuania, France's European affairs minister Jean-Pierre Jouyet said Thursday in Vilnius.

"We have huge experience in this area and are ready to cooperate with Lithuanian institutions in this area," Jouyet said at a briefing after a two-day visit to the Lithuanian capital.

"Our companies will work with an aim to join the project", he added.

Lithuania plans to build new nuclear power plant, which would replace ageing Ignalina nuclelar facility.

The Baltic country has comitted to the European Union to close Chernobyl-type Ignalina plant by 2010 and aims to build new nuclear power plant by 2015.

Estonia, Latvia and Poland are also due to join the project.

Jouyet also said that France is ready to cooperate with Lithuania in other energy projects like building energy bridge to Poland and connecting the the gas pipelines of the two countries.

"All these projects would ensure Lithuania's energy independance. It is very important that Euroepan energy independance is secured," Jouyet said.

Lithuania, as well as two other Baltic countries are heavily dependent on energy resources from Russia and this independance is to increase further when Lithuania shuts down Ignalina nuclear power plant.

Indian parliament stalls over US nuke deal

India's opposition stalled parliament on Thursday over a controversial nuclear accord with the United States as it demanded a joint parliamentary probe into the deal.
