Framatome partners with Japan on sodium-cooled fast reactor development

Framatome, alongside the Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), and Mitsubishi FBR Systems (MFBR), has formalized a key Design Cooperation Implementation Arrangement focused on the development of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors (SFR). Signed during a ceremony in Tokyo, this collaboration signals the start of Framatome's contributions to Japan's new demonstration SFR initiative.

The project centers on a ~600 MWe demonstration reactor employing an integrated pool-type SFR architecture, which was initially developed and implemented in France. Framatome will offer its extensive expertise in design evaluation and technological feedback, responding to the request from its Japanese collaborators. This initiative is part of a broader cooperation framework established between French and Japanese authorities to advance SFR technologies.

Francois Billot, Executive Vice President of Framatome Offers and Projects, commented, "Framatome is proud to be able to share its experience in developing this technology with our Japanese partners. This cooperation will contribute to reinforcing and maintaining the skills acquired by Framatome in the field of Sodium-cooled Fast Reactors. This new agreement strengthens the cooperation that began 10 years ago."
