Washington (AFP) March 22, 2016

Intel's former CEO and chairman Andy Grove, under whose leadership the company became a household name in computers and helped usher in the PC era, died Monday at the age of 79, the company said.

The cause of death was not given but news reports said Grove had been battling Parkinson's disease for years.

Grove, born in Hungary, was present at the company's founding in 1968, and became its president in 1979 and CEO in 1987.

He served as chairman of the board from 1997 to 2005.

Intel said Grove played an essential role in the company's shift in focus from memory chips to microprocessors.

Under his leadership Intel developed microprocessors including the 386 and the Pentium, which helped ring in the personal computer era, Intel said.

"We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Intel Chairman and CEO Andy Grove," said Intel CEO Brian Krzanich on the company website.

"Andy made the impossible happen, time and again, and inspired generations of technologists, entrepreneurs, and business leaders," he added.

When he was at the helm, the company also increased annual revenues from $1.9 billion to more than $26 billion, the company said.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said of him, "Andy Grove was one of the giants of the technology world. He loved our country and epitomized America at its best. Rest in peace."

Grove emigrated to the United States in 1956-7 having survived Nazi occupation and escaped Soviet repression.

Grove's 1999 book "Only the Paranoid Survive" is still very popular in the business management world.

He is survived by his wife Eva, to whom he was married for 58 years, as well as two daughters and eight grandchildren.

Internet tycoon Elon Musk and actress Talulah Riley divorce
Los Angeles (AFP) March 22, 2016 - Entrepreneur Elon Musk and his British actress wife Talulah Riley are to end their marriage for a second time, official sources told AFP on Monday.

The couple wed in 2010 and remarried in 2013 after a their first divorce, but Riley filed for divorce again in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, according to a joint statement sent to AFP.

Musk had himself filed for divorce on New Year's Eve 2014 but withdrew the petition seven months later.

The statement said the couple had been living separately for six months but the break was amicable and they would continue to see each other "occasionally, as friends."

Musk is one of the world's wealthiest individuals with a net worth estimated at some $13.7 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

In 2010, he went through a messy divorce from his Canadian-born wife, science-fiction writer Justine Musk, mother of their five sons, including triplets. She wrote about the proceedings on a blog.

A 44-year-old South African native, Elon Musk co-founded Paypal and channeled a dot-com fortune into a series of ambitious ventures.

He is the co-creator of luxury all-electric US car maker Tesla, founded in 2003, and California-based space travel company SpaceX.

Riley played Mary Bennet in 2005's "Pride and Prejudice" opposite Keira Knightley, and had a minor role in Christopher Nolan's "Inception" (2010).

The couple do not have any children together.

Magnetic chips could dramatically increase energy efficiency of computers
Berkeley CA (SPX) Mar 21, 2016
In a breakthrough for energy-efficient computing, engineers at the University of California, Berkeley, have shown for the first time that magnetic chips can operate with the lowest fundamental level of energy dissipation possible under the laws of thermodynamics. The findings, to be published in the peer-reviewed journal Science Advances, mean that dramatic reductions in power consumption ... read more
