Floods in eastern China kill six: state media

Torrential rains and flooding in eastern China have killed six people and destroyed more than 1,200 homes, state media reported Tuesday.

Three days of heavy rain in Anhui province over the weekend left one person dead, forced the evacuation of more than 1,200 people and destroyed more than 21,600 hectares (53,400 acres) of crops, Xinhua news agency reported.

Five people were killed in flooding in nearby Shandong province, where 64 homes were destroyed and 1,100 people were evacuated, the agency reported.

The storm caused an estimated 143 million yuan (20.5 million dollars) in damage in the two provinces, Xinhua said, citing the civil affairs bureau.

The Huai River in Anhui, one of China's most flood-prone waterways, rose past the danger mark on Monday at Wangjiaba, a hydrological station in Anhui, the report said.

11 feared missing in Grand Canyon flood are safe: police

Eleven hikers feared missing after flash flooding that deluged a remote Grand Canyon village on an Indian reservation have been located and are safe, police said Tuesday.
