Helsinki (AFP) June 5, 2009 A Finnish man with HIV who had unprotected sex with 20 women, including one of whom he raped, was handed a 12-year jail term on Friday after prosecutors had appealed against his initial sentence. Aki Hakkarainen was jailed for 10 years by a district court last August but the appeal court in Rovaniemi said the sentence for intentionally transmitting HIV was insufficient given that five of the women had developed the AIDS virus. The court added that Hakkarainen had deliberately hidden his HIV status even when specifically asked if he had any infections. The amount of damages remained unchanged in the court of appeal and Hakkarainen has to pay to his victims a total of 330,000 euros (469,000 dollars). Share This Article With Planet Earth
