EU confirms Iran to meet nuclear deal members
by Staff Writers
Brussels (AFP) July 23, 2019

Iran will meet envoys from Britain, China, France, Germany and Russia in Vienna on Sunday as they try to save their troubled nuclear deal, the EU confirmed Tuesday.

The United States has abandoned the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), under which the 2015 deal is implemented, and tensions are again rising in the Gulf.

The European Union said the July 28 extraordinary meeting would be chaired by the secretary general of the European External Action Service, Helga Maria Schmid.

It said the talks were requested by Britain, France, Germany and Iran and "will examine issues linked to the implementation of the JCPOA in all its aspects."

Iranian authorities had previously announced the meeting.

Or Friday, amid rising hostilities between Tehran and Western capitals, Iran's Revolutionary Guards Corps seized a tanker sailing under the flag of US ally Britain.

Iran said Tuesday it will attend an urgent meeting with countries still party to the troubled nuclear deal, as it declared itself the "guardian of security" in the Gulf amid a tanker crisis.
