Czech Settlements Protest Against Radioactive Nuclear Waste Repositories
by Staff Writers
Prague, Czech Republic (SPX) Apr 23, 2015

The government is planning to establish nuclear storage facilities in a number of Czech settlements, causing disapproval among the local population.

Seven settlements in the Czech Republic protested on Saturday against the potential creation of deep burials for radioactive waste, according to Radio Praha.

The corresponding research activities are due to take place in the near future. Government approval for research in these areas was received by the administration of radioactive waste in 2014.

Activists organized relay races, competitions and concerts, to protest against the government's intentions to create such burials. They have criticized the government for its lack of vision and respect for the views of the residents.

Construction of storage facilities may take place in the settlements of Certovka, Kravi Hora and others. If the plan is implemented, the facilities will start their work in 2065.

Nuclear waste often causes concern among the population with regard to its radioactivity, implying potential risks to human health.
