Colombia receives Northrop Grumman AN/TPS-78 radar

The Colombian Air Force has received Northrop Grumman's new AN/TPS-78 3-D radar, following two flights from the United States to deliver the product.

Four systems were delivered to the country on October 12, as the armed forces there conduct the first phase of the Integrated Air Defense System Colombia. Northrop Grumman received $126 million for the contract, according to Infodefensa.

The AN/TPS-78 is one of Northrop Grumman's latest generation of advanced air surveillance radars, and is also used by the U.S. Air Force. The radar is capable of tracking 1,000 targets at a range of over 276 miles at high and low altitudes.

The radar's technology is also designed to cut back on jamming, choosing the least interfered frequency operating at 300MHz. The system emits no elements, making it hard for anti-radar technology to track.

A mobile version of the AN/TPS-78 comes mounted on a single all-wheel drive vehicle.
