Chinese dissident got money from Taiwan ex-leader: report

by Staff Writers
Taipei (AFP) April 15, 2011
One of the main student leaders from the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests admitted Friday to accepting $400,000 from Taiwan's jailed former president Chen Shui-bian, a report said.

Exiled Chinese dissident Wang Dan told judges at Taiwan's High Court that he twice received $200,000 from Chen for "financial support", without elaborating, said the state Central News Agency, citing unnamed sources.

The court is considering charges that Chen embezzled state funds during his 2000-2008 term. The ex-leader has insisted that the money was used for "secret diplomatic missions" for Taiwan.

Chen is serving a 17-and-a-half-year sentence on two convictions of bribery in separate cases which also implicated his wheelchair-bound wife, who was spared the same prison term due to her poor health.

The former leader says that the legal action against him is a political vendetta carried out by Taiwan's current Beijing-friendly government in retaliation for his pro-independence stance while in power.

Wang, who has been living in exile in Taiwan in recent years, was not immediately available for comment.
