Chinese electric vehicle maker XPeng is recalling more than 47,000 electric sedans with hands-free driving capabilities over a glitch in its assisted steering system, Beijing's market supervisor said on Friday.

Some wiring issues in the P7+ model's steering system might trigger a warning light that could cause it to fail, making it a safety hazard, China's State Administration for Market Regulation said in a statement.

The P7+, launched last November, starts at 186,900 yuan ($26,200) and has "AI smart assisted driving", according to XPeng's website.

The market supervisor said XPeng would recall from Monday a total of 47,490 P7+ cars manufactured between August 20, 2024, and April 27, 2025, it said.

China's tech companies and automakers have poured billions of dollars into self-driving technology in recent years, with intelligent driving the new battleground in the country's cutthroat domestic car market.

However, the government has warned leading automakers that safety rules would be more tightly enforced after a crash that killed three college students raised concerns over the advertising of cars as being capable of autonomous driving.

XPeng will replace the at-risk steering systems for free, the market supervisor said.

The carmaker said on social media on Friday its P7+ cars would soon be launched in a slate of European countries, including Germany and France.
