Chevron confirmed its Philippines subsidiary suffered a spill during the loading of fuel, but noted the leak was fully contained within hours of the incident.

Chevron noted the spill while loading fuel at the Batangas port terminal, located on the west side of the Philippines island of Luzo. The company said loading was halted immediately after the leak was discovered and spillage was contained within two hours of the initial discovery.

"Chevron is cooperating with the relevant government authorities, including the Philippine Coast Guard and the Department of Energy, about the incident," the company said in an emailed statement. "The leaked product has been recovered from sea and the wharf platform, which is estimated to be less than 80 gallons [slightly less than 2 barrels of oil equivalent]."

Chevron operates mainly in the Philippines gas sector, where it holds a 45 percent stake in the country's Malampaya natural gas field. The field produces on average 118 million cubic feet of natural gas per day from deep waters.

Gas from Malampaya is transported 314 miles to shore via a subsea pipeline connected to the Batangas onshore natural gas plant on the main island of Luzon. Gas is then transferred to three onshore power plants in the country.
