Canada buying radar from Rheinmetall Canada and Elta Systems

Canada's Department of National Defense has contracted Rheinmetall-Canada and Elta Systems for the provision of medium-range radar.

Israel Aerospace Industries, parent company of Elta, said the radar to be provided is the Elta ELM-2084 Multi-Mission Radar "Iron Dome," which includes C-RAM (Counter Rockets, Artillery and Mortars) and air-surveillance capabilities.

The radar will be produced in Canada in cooperation with Rheinmetall-Canada.

"We are honoured to have been selected by the Canadian Army," said Mr. Nissim Hadas, IAI's executive vice president and Elta president. "Together, with our partners in Rheinmetall-Canada, we will provide the most sophisticated C-RAM, air-surveillance and radar available, with a significant portion of the production to be performed locally in Canada."

The ELM-2084 MMR is a three-dimensional, S-band radar that incorporates modular and scalable architecture. Its solid-state, electronically-steered active array system incorporates Gallium Nitride technology. It is deigned to simultaneously detect rockets, artillery and mortars at long ranges, and can simultaneously engage a large number of targets.

According to Jason Kenney, Canada's Minister of National Defense, the contract covers the delivery of 10 systems within three years. A second contract was also awarded for in-service support.

The combined value of the awards is about $186.7 million.
