British Energy says takeover talks continue

by Staff Writers
London (AFP) July 17, 2008
Nuclear power operator British Energy said Thursday that it was continuing to hold talks with potential buyers.

The firm had said last month that a series of takeover proposals it had received from unnamed parties had undervalued the company.

"Our dialogue is continuing and a further announcement will be made in due course, however ... we will not be able to discuss the process in further detail today," British Energy said in a statement issued ahead of its annual general meeting on Thursday.

French state-owned energy giant EDF is regarded by analysts as the favourite to win a European battle to buy British Energy, which is a third-owned by Britain's Labour government.

German power giant RWE has also been linked with a possible bid for British Energy, while Spain's Iberdrola has ruled out a move.

The British government has a 35.2 percent stake in British Energy, which provides nearly 19 percent of the country's electricity, and owns and operates eight nuclear power stations.

Analysis: Nuclear revival without Germany
Berlin (UPI) Jul 16, 2008
Global warming and rising energy prices have sparked a worldwide renaissance of nuclear energy -- but not in Germany, where the grand coalition government is still bickering over the planned phase-out of nuclear power by 2021.
