BlueHalo has reached a major milestone in space-based communications, successfully demonstrating its two-terminal, long-haul laser communication system designed for use across multiple orbital regimes. This advancement in free-space optical communications represents a pivotal moment for both defense and commercial applications, promising improved data transmission over long distances in space.

In the latest test, BlueHalo's laser communication terminals executed critical tasks including pointing, acquisition, and tracking while operating at transmission power levels appropriate for crosslinks between satellites in different orbits. These tasks were completed in a controlled simulation that replicated the harsh and dynamic conditions of space, such as mechanical vibrations, extreme thermal variation, and a vacuum environment.

The demonstration validates the system's ability to support high-bandwidth, secure data exchange over extended distances in space, encompassing low Earth orbit (LEO), medium Earth orbit (MEO), geostationary orbit (GEO), and potentially beyond. Following this success, BlueHalo's optical terminals now meet the criteria for Technology Readiness Level 6 (TRL 6), indicating they are suitable for deployment in relevant operational conditions.

"I'm incredibly proud of our team, whose dedication to the mission has led to this milestone - developing a space-based laser communication capability that is orders of magnitude greater than existing technology on orbit today," said Mary Clum, President of the Product and Space Systems Portfolio. "With the technology validated, BlueHalo is ready to begin quickly producing these advanced optical terminals for deployment on satellites across all echelons of space. It's an urgent need to enhance our nation's security posture - in space and on the ground - and support the rapidly accelerating demand for rapid transport of high-bandwidth, mission-critical data. We're ready."

These cutting-edge terminals are designed for use in both military and commercial sectors, providing a robust solution for reliable, long-range data transfer in space. They represent the next evolution of BlueHalo's existing optical systems, many of which are already operational in orbit. With increased accuracy, extended range, and enhanced dependability, the new terminals are set to play a key role in advancing space communication infrastructure.
