Biodiesel Derived From Pennycress
Albany NY (SPX) Oct 22, 2008 Innovation Fuels has announced that it is conducting the first pilot program across New York State to plant the oilseed crop pennycress with the intent of producing biodiesel. Among the selected planting sites will be two acres on the campus of Morrisville State College in Morrisville, NY. This marks the first effort in United States history where non-edible pennycress has been planted to produce an alternative energy fuel such as sustainable biodiesel. In addition to the Morrisville project, other plantings are scheduled to follow in New York State throughout fall 2008. No stranger to being at the forefront in the biofuels sector, earlier this year the company shipped the first-ever biodiesel (more than 15,000 barrels or 2,000 metric tons) from a New York Harbor producer bound for Rotterdam, marking the initial shipment serving European customers through Innovation Fuels Europe, a joint venture between Innovation Fuels and Arpadis Group. "We are very excited about the possibilities of producing and providing a low cost alternative energy source to the residents of New York State and beyond for applications including home heating, electricity and, of course, transportation," remarked Joe Dickson, Senior Vice President of Business Development for Innovation Fuels. "Innovation Fuels is on the path to helping New York become less dependent on foreign oil by creating a renewable and sustainable energy resource in biodiesel," State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli said. "Morrisville State College is a welcome partner with Innovation Fuels in cultivating pennycress for use in biodiesel in New York State. Innovation Fuels is proving to be a promising investment for the New York State Common Retirement Fund. This partnership is good for New York's environment, its economy and the one million members of the Retirement System." Innovation Fuels is a vertically integrated, producer of renewable, environmentally friendly fuels with a global reach and a verified 950,000 barrel or 130,000 metric tons per year refinery located in New York Harbor. It recently acquired North American Biodiesel, a company that was founded two years ago for the purpose of developing a biodiesel production facility in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and provides Innovation Fuels with direct, deep-water international access via leasehold at the Port of Milwaukee, which is located on the western shore of Lake Michigan. Siemens USDA ARS Second Gen Biofuel Feedstocks Pilot Plant
Atlanta GA (SPX) Oct 22, 2008Siemens Energy and Automation and the United States Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Agricultural Research Service (ARS) have entered into a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) that will improve the processes used to convert second generation, non-food-based, biofuel feedstocks, including perennial grasses, animal wastes and agricultural residues such as corn stover, into liquid bio-fuel intermediates, such as bio-oil. |
