Australia pursues buoyancy system for helicopters

The Australian government is further investing in the development of an emergency floatation device for rotary-wing aircraft.

The device is called the Pegasus Aircraft Buoyancy System, which has been developed by Australian company One Atmosphere in collaboration with Airbus Group Australia Pacific.

"The Government is investing an additional $4 million [USD3 million] in funding for this innovative Australian company to develop a system that will help ensure the safety of our ADF members," Australian Defense Minister Minister Marise Payne said.

"The Pegasus technology will be initially focused on the Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter to support their use from HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide."

ADF stands for Australian Defense Force.

The additional investment will support the further development of the technology and brings the total government funding in Pegasus to about $5.89 million.

"Congratulations to One Atmosphere and Airbus Group Australia Pacific for their role in developing this high-priority capability, which is exactly the sort of innovative solution that we need to support the ADF," Minister Payne said.
