Australia extends solidarity to flood-hit Brazil

by Staff Writers
Brisbane, Australia (AFP) Jan 15, 2011
Flood-stricken Australia on Saturday expressed its sympathy and solidarity with Brazil, where floods and landslides have killed more than 500 people.

As thousands of Australians mobilised to clean-up the Queensland capital of Brisbane, and floods threatened towns in the country's southeast, Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said his thoughts were also with the South American nation.

"The situation in Brazil is very bad," he told Channel Nine.

"As Australia's Foreign Minister I extend our heartfelt condolences, our sympathy, our solidarity and our support to the good people of Brazil, going through a terrible time right now."

The Australian floods have affected an area the size of France and Germany combined, flooded thousands of homes and, over the last week, killed at least 16 people.

In Brazil, at least 545 people are dead and 12,000 homeless following the country's worst ever flood disaster.
